The University of Tennessee Chattanooga (UTC) is located only a few blocks from the urban area of Chattanooga, a city that is both highly industrial and rich in natural beauty (chattanoogafun.com). Claiming more than 600 industries, Chattanooga lies at the foot of Lookout and Signal Mountains where the Tennessee River forms Moccasin Bend. “These sites possess historical significance as well as beauty in a city steeped in the heritage of the Civil War. In Chattanooga, there are always plenty of activities to partake in after studying. The evolving city is perfect for students who love the outdoors; Lookout and Signal Mountains are located within the city. Chattanooga has also gained a reputation as one of America’s most bicycle-friendly cities (Adler 40d). Other off-campus activities include taking a stroll on the Walnut Street Walking Bridge, walking, or running on the thirteen-mile Riverwalk along the Tennessee River, rock climbing, and white-water rafting. In 2010, UTC opened the new Aquatic and Recreation Center (ARC). The ARC features one large multi-sport court, a forty-four foot indoor rock climbing tower, fourteen thousand square feet of exercising space and equipment, small and large aerobic rooms, and an indoor track. The ARC also features a lazy river, a five lap line swim area, thirty person hot tub, water basketball and water volleyball courts, and a two story high, 157 foot long water slide (utc.edu).
