The novels Brave New World (1932) and Island (1962) by Aldous Huxley portray the different views that Huxley had on society. The novels portray two different views Huxley had on what a utopian society was over the thirty year period. During the time between the two novels the American culture and society in which Huxley was living was changing. In the 1930’s the Great Depression was occurring as well as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. While, in the 1960’s the Vietnam War was ongoing, and hippies were prominent. Within both novels there was an explanation as to how a utopian society could be created and may look in the world today. Pala is not very industrialized; it is an agrarian society. Pala is focused on sustainability and self-sufficiency. Natural births in Pala are not considered gross. People born on Pala are born of natural births. The people on Pala do not see technology as advances. They believe that true advances are self-advances. Moksha-medicine is used to help the people with their self-advancement.
The New Society and Pala have their own forms of technology and what they consider advances. However, they do have ideas and concepts that are similar. Both the New Society and Pala use their technology for the overall good of the society. They both believe that the ways their societies are run are the way all things should be run. Moreover, both societies are striving for the survival of their utopias.
The life styles of the New Society and Pala have differences in family structure, and conformity. The New Society has no family structure. The entire concept of parents has mostly been destroyed within the New Society. Parents are not seen as a necessary part to keep the society functioning. The use of the hypnopædia and soma aid in conforming people into the
