In, "The Artist Trying to Get It All Down," Maynard creates a biographical piece, crafted on linocut, which speaks to her role as a black woman in the United States (Carroll). The scene depicts Maynard at the forefront, carefully working with head bent. Distressing images of African Americans compose the background, including; a jailed individual behind bars, a person crouched in a defeated position, a man with blood pouring from his skull, a figure protectively hugging a child, and a man curled up asleep on the ground (Carroll).
