Ed Asner once said, “There are genuinely sufficient resources in the world to ensure that no one, nowhere, at no time, should go hungry” A variety of the local resources for the ones in need is the food bank. Valley View Community Food Bank is a local food bank in the El Mirage area. A email was sent to contact the founder, Jesse Ramirez, whom affably offered to meet up for a interview on Saturday, November 4th, 2017. Using the twelve questions from CRE 101, the interview was a success and a majority of the questions were answered. Attached are the interview questions:
Do you know how much food is wasted per year, just in the United States? I do not know the answer to that but I know that our part in the food bank is to not have t hat waste.

Bloom stated, “While expiration dates waste hasn’t been studied in the United States, a government- funded study in the United Kingdom found that Britons waste approximately 370,000 tons annually because of label date confusion” (166). Grocery store throw foods that aren’t perishable and can last for years. The expiration date determines whether food is thrown or kept for sale. Bloom also received additional information about food waste from, “Timothy Jones, the former University of Arizona anthropology researcher who has studied throughout the food chain, found that convenience stores waste 26 percent of their product, by far the highest percentage of the section” (74). A variety of factors determine a foods lifespan. This 26 percent of food waste includes the lack of education on expiration dates. Mr. Ramirez mentioned how he reminds grocery stores to donate anything and everything. He also said how he has professional volunteers and staff members who examine each donation.
