Learning is a multifaceted process that can be molded and strengthened through numerous factors. There is no universal strategy for learning and each individual will develop his/her own learning strategy. One’s personality, abilities, and preferences will play a major role in determining their learning styles. Studies show that students who perceive learning as a comprehending reality, rather than a quantifiable rise in knowledge, are more likely to consider a serious approach towards learning (Sviden, 2000). Understanding one’s learning style will help make the process of learning much simpler and exciting. According to the Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS), the process of learning is influenced by various factors such as “immediate environment (sound, atmosphere and light), personal/sensory preferences (visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic), emotional factors (responsibility, flexibility, motivation), physical requirements (intake, mobility, time of the day), and sociological needs (interpersonal, intrapersonal and flexible)” ("PEPS," 2012). These factors will help achieve productivity and success in education. Neil D. Fleming developed VARK analysis in order to determine four individualized learning strategies. Through this paper, the student nurse desires to identify the favored learning style and the modifications required to enhance learning experience.
VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic and the questionnaire is designed to determine if the candidate prefers one or a combination of these modes. Favoring one mode means that the student prefers to obtain information in that particular mode only; whereas students who prefer a multimodal approach prefers the use of more than one mode. Students who are visual learners often prefer pictures or diagrams to explain ideas. Aural learners prefer listening and
