One way a third person limited point of veiw impacts the story and the reader is the increase of suspence. As Barton quote’s “H the amount of fuel will power an EDS with a mass of M… H amount of fuel will not power an EDS with a mass M plus X” (Godwin 174). The increase of suspence is the amount of fuel and mass the EDS was originally calibrated with, but plus Marolyn which has now messed up the equation, due to this the suspence increases because now the equation has a extra and not needed additive (Marolyn) and the only way to correct it and avoid a crash and death of Barton, Marolyn, and seven colonist’s on woden is to jettison Marolyn. As Commander Delhart state’s to Barton “so you called me in the hope i could do somthing?... i’m sorry… you’ll have to go through with it” (Godwin 169). This big event in the story’s plot is that even though Barton called Commander Delhat in hope’s of finding any way he could save Marolyn, nothing could be done, the thing that needs to be done as Delhart stated was to go through with it, meaning Barton with have to go through with jettisioning Marolyn, wich will kill her.
