In Velding’s (2017) content analysis of Girls’ Life magazine, the primary way tween girls are introduced to the importance of makeup in the maintenance and construction of femininity is through advertisements of lip products. These advertisements tell girls that they should bring attention to their lips as a sign of their femininity. According to Velding, these advertisements carry the underlying message that lip gloss makes girls prettier and ever girl should have it. This is one of the ways society starts to pressure girls to care about their appearance and tells them that doing so is a sign of femininity. This is the introduction of tweens to a life throughout which, they will be “objectified and scrutinized” for their appearance.
