It is an undeniable fact that both Hans Huberman and Johannes Vermeer possessed a certain authority around them. As seen on page 4 of Girl With a Pearl Earring Vermeer confidently quiets and consoles his wife as her protective figure. He then proceeds to take full control of evaluating Griet which previously was being done by Catharina, Vermeer’s Wife, on the following pages. This shows Vermeer’s authority over his house and wife. On the other side of the parallelism the reader has Hans Huberman in The Book Thief. He displays his authority in very similar yet unique ways to Vermeer. The reader is introduced to Hans’s authority on the same page that his character is introduced on; on page 27 of The Book Thief Liesel is first introduced
