“Why do you insist on taking the difficult path?” this was what I heard from others every time when talking about career path after graduation. A career as a veterinary doctor in Korea is regarded a very good job and one that guarantees a comfortable daily life. However, instead of following that comfortable life path of general clinical careers, I decided to pursue a career in science after graduation. Even though following a research path might seem difficult, I was truly convinced that this would be most appropriate for my long-term career goal which will lead me to understand disease mechanisms.
Studying veterinary medicine for six years at Chonnam National University, I really enjoyed pathology and infectious disease class with a strong interest in the pathogenesis of disease. During the class, I focused on the mechanisms underlying the main

My coursework at veterinary school for six years, my further learning and experience obtained over the two and half years of my Master of Science course, and my experience in preparing papers and participating in international conferences will surely strengthen my candidacy stepping forward as a young scientist. Discovering the mechanisms involved in AD pathogenesis and identifying candidate molecules which regulate mitochondrial function are my initial goals. Ultimately, it is my desire to become a scientist offering an answer how this maintenance of mitochondrial function could halt the Alzheimer’s disease progression and developing new therapeutics that is able to contribute to the people with neurodegenerative diseases, even though I may not be a medical doctor. I believe that support from the Special Emphasis Research Career Award (SERCA) will allow me to enhance my knowledge and skills and help progress along my chosen path. SERCA will assist my research career to become an independent scientist in the biomedical
