However, this is one of the most important differences that is seen throughout the novel. Looks do not tell a person’s story, but it is the first thing someone sees when they are being approached by another person. During the novel, the difference between Victor and the creature’s appearance creates a huge amount of dramatic irony. For example, when the creature confronts De Lacey, he tells De Lacey that he is “a traveler in want of a little rest” (113). The creature obviously is not a traveler and is actually the scariest thing that De Lacey would see in his life (if he has the ability to see) When the creature’s appearance is not taken into consideration, De Lacey treats the creature how he wants to be treated, like a normal human being. Victor has a huge advantage when walking around in public because he blends in. Sadly, the creature does not blend in well in public which makes his life harder than Victor’s. If the creature were to go out in society, he would be shunned because of how he looked. The only clear description that is given about the creature from someone who is not Victor is from Walton. He gives a clear description of how horrid the creature actually is: “his [the creature’s] face was concealed by long locks of ragged hair; but one vast hand was extended, in colour and apparent texture like that of a mummy...
