I. Group History The Communist victory of the Vietnam War in April 1997 stated the migration of Vietnamese from the country (Tran, 2012). A combination of factors led to the Vietnamese people fleeing their home country. Many Vietnamese immigrants fled Vietnam due to political, social and economic persecution (Tran, 2012). The Vietnamese that that moved from their home country distributed across the world. It is estimated that 839,228 refuges fled from their home country (Tran, 2012). The United States was one of the destinations for this group. The Vietnamese largely immigrated to this county in three distinct waves. The first group immigrated to this county between 1975 and 1977 (Chu & Leasure, 2010). The first group settled in specific areas in the United States. The first wave of immigrants settled mainly in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and New York (Chu & Leasure, 2010).

One of the main purposes of language in Vietnamese-American culture is to allow intergenerational communication with family members (Tran, 2008). In this culture maintaining close connections with immediate and as well as extended family is emphasized (Chu & Leasure, 2010). Speaking a common language allow Vietnamese-Americans to continue a core belief of their culture. Communicating in their native Vietnamese tongue provides an opportunity for Vietnamese-American to remain connected with older family members that do not speak English and with family members that live in Vietnam (Chu & Leasure,
