There are more than 50,000 lawyers and 8,000 licensed paralegal professionals throughout Ontario. The profession has a strong sense of social responsibility. There is hardly a community organization or charity in the province that doesn’t have at least one lawyer serving pro bono on its board of directors. Importantly, each of these professionals can be reached directly through The Law Society of Upper Canada (“LSUC”). Consequently, with the support of The LSUC, a motivated legal profession can provide efficient and effective leadership for cultural events in every part of Ontario. That marked the end of the first nationally coordinated remembrance that included the outstanding military service of Canada’s legal profession. Members of The LSUC and the Vimy Foundation orchestrated that national effort from Ontario. The Campbell House exhibition, entirely the work of the legal profession, was one of three principle Vimy 100 events in Ontario. It focused primarily on the individual law students who fell at Vimy thereby providing a compelling forum to promote “service and leadership” as integral personal qualities that are fundamental to the legal profession.
