At the end of November I attended an event where they screened a documentary about young males struggling to stay true to themselves while negotiating the typical standard of being masculine. Young men are being pressured by society and their peers to cut off their emotional connections within themselves and others, disrespecting women, and using violence as the only solution to a conflict. Being the opposite sex it’s kind of hard to connect with the film, but then they talked about how males objectify and degrade women. As a victim of sexual assault and rape the film hit home. “Boys will be boys” a common quote individuals will say to save the perpetrators’ future, but they won’t take the blame for how they and society raised young males.
