Violence is never an answer, but if there is a large enough issue, then peaceful resistance may not impact a free society the way people think. A violent resistance gets people involved, gets people angry. It enrages people to act quickly and irrationally when faced with ideas that jeopardize their way of life. Yet at the same time, this violence resistance is not always a good thing. People become overly aggressive and take the situation farther than just vandalism. Innocent bystanders can get hurt.
