Workgroups within professional organizations give members a voice in the shaping the future of healthcare information systems. A review of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) websites demonstrates there are many opportunities for nurses to get involved. The AMIA Analytics Work Group is helping improve the way information is used within Electronic Health Records. The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Executive Workgroup is looking at way to engage patients through the use of technology.
Visual Analytics Working Group
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Visual Analytics Work Group is exploring new techniques to improve data mining, data analytics, and the human-computer interfaces in order to resolve many of the challenges being seen in healthcare informatics today. Improving the visual analytics of current Electronic health records (EHR) is important to control the flood of data available to healthcare providers as they try to make critical …show more content…
David Butler (2016) states in Healthcare IT News that many EHRs have poorly designed workflows and do not present information to providers in a way to assure critical issues are addressed. The purpose of the Visual Analytics Work Group is to stimulate research and development of new visual analytic techniques which makes information more insightful, accessible, and actionable to a wide range of healthcare providers. Butler argues that lean processes need to be applied to Electronic Health Records. It is important that the workgroup and others utilize the 5 whys when looking at the overwhelming amount of data be presented to health care providers each day. It is imperative that systems be developed to present critical data to providers in a meaningful way so they can may the appropriate decisions. New methods need to be designed to alert providers of potential patient safety risk, without causing alert
