About five or six years ago, I was working as an LPN at a residential care facility. When the coordinator was let go, I was placed as the interim coordinator for the unit. During my short lived three months as the coordinator I was informed by the DON at the time that I was doing a great job with the unit but I needed to obtain my RN to continue working in the position. However, about one week before I started my classes, the DON came to me and told me that I would need to step down as the interim coordinator and work weekend package in the health center. The health center is what they referred the long-term care unit. The DON stated it was because I would be in school for my RN, and promised that once I graduated with my RN I would be the coordinator of the unit. I had worked for the organization for about four years at the time and decided that I would do as they asked to cover the long-term care unit on the weekends. So after about a year, I graduated from my program and obtained my RN. During the time I was working on my RN, the DON placed her best friend who was a LPN at the time, in the coordinator position. When I mentioned how they required me to obtain my RN for the position, the DON brushed it off and stated that she was now covering the RN portion of the position and the company could not afford to pay an RN in the role.
