In the poem “When I Heard the Learn‘d Astronomer,“ I believe that Walt Whitman wanted to portray the importance of challenging authority, and promote hands-on learning. His goal was to have the audience step away from the stereotype of learning that society has implanted into thought. The belief that in order to grasp an idea, and understand how the world works, on has to be confined in a controlled environment listening to an superior figure lecture.
