Maya Angelou once said “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” If someone encounters a defeat, they should retry it and try not to fail at it, one you defeat something it will show you who you are and how you can overcome it. In the book Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Beals, in the video Catching Kayla by ESPN, and in the video The Austin Hatch Story by ESPN, all want to do something that someone disapproves or says that they should not do. Melba, Kayla, and Austin all show in order to be a survivor, one needs to be able to persevere through the hardest of times.

Austin is a survivor because after he got in two plane crashes, he wants to play basketball. He lost two mothers and a father in both crashes. During his second accident, he was almost at the point of death. When the reporter asks him a question his answer was “I’ve only had two bad days in my life”(Hatch). The only two bad days was when he was in both of the airplane accidents. After his second crash, he found out that he had severe injuries and was stuck in a wheelchair. He wants to go to college and play basketball, but he could not because of his injuries. He did a lot of physical therapy to get back to where he is
