The Warsaw Ghetto was set up during World War 2 as a staging area to house Polish Jews before they are shipped off to the death camps. Several hundred thousand Jews are held there in total. The first round of the deportations to the death or labor camps lasted from July 22- September 12. Over 250,000 Jews were sent away during these initial deportations. At the same time, a group known as the Jewish Fighting Organization was formed to resist the Nazis ("The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising").
The organization, which came to be called the ZOB, managed to acquire a small stockpile of weapons and armaments from Polish citizens for the purpose of revolting against their Nazi occupiers. They were facing an outnumbered and under powered ZOB force of about 750. Fighting lasted several days before an order was given to burn the ghetto down one building at a time. Even so, fighting continued until May 16, when all remaining Jews were captured or killed. As a symbol of their victory, the Germans blew up the Great Synagogue of Warsaw, which stood outside of the ghetto (Jewishvirtuallibrary.org)

Although the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising ended in a defeat for the rebels, it came as massive boost to the morale of the Jews. It showed that a small, unorganized group of fighters was capable of resisting some of the most well-trained soldiers of World War 2.
