John Brown was not a murderous madman who ended all hope of freeing the slaves in a peaceful manner, but a hero who helped free the slaves. According to an Address on Harper’s Ferry made by Frederick Douglass on May 30, 1881, he declares “No man fails, or can fail who so grandly gives himself and all he has to a righteous cause.” This demonstrates that Brown was a hero because he gave his life unselfishly for a better cause of freeing the slaves. Brown gave his life so that others might have a chance to live their lives as free citizens in the United States, and not inferiors without rights or privileges. In addition, a Civil War song called The Old Song states “He’s gone to be a soldier in the army of the Lord; But his soul is marching on.”
