A virtual art museum tour: Analyzing a few of my favorites
The painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware was somewhat familiar to me. I had studied about it in a previous art class I took in High School and I also remember seeing it in several History books. The other painting by Homer, The Life Line, was new to me, I found it to be a very interesting piece.
Washington portrayed by a German artist
I was surprised to learn that this famous painting of our country’s greatest general and the father of the United States of America, was actually painted by a German Artist by the name of Emanuel Leutze. He painted it in Dusseldorf, a city in Western Germany during the 19th century. He started on the first canvas in 1849, but it was destroyed in WWII during an Allied forces bombing raid. The next year he started a second version of the painting and he completed it by October of 1851.

When I learned that we had to select two art works to study, I immediately thought of this one. Due to my interest in American and War history, I have always been fascinated by this particular painting. I was eager to learn more about it and the origins of this classic depiction of such a monumental moment in American history. I think the artist intentionally designed it on such a large scale, to highlight the true significance of the moment and the leader that Washington was.
The painting is officially titled Washington Crossing the Delaware, by Emanuel Leutze in 1851. It measures 378.5 x 647.7 cm, it is an oil on canvas painting that was painted in Dusseldorf Germany. It is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of
