Now that the magazine had a publisher, it needed an editor; Irving was now well known for his successful Knickerbocker’s History… and was thought to be full of potential(Pattee 199). Washington was offered the job and “he… entered upon the adventure with no thought of serious work”(Pattee 200) and was met by many compliments for taking the reins of “literary leadership”(Pattee 199) as editor(Pattee 199). The literary opportunities of editorship were the things that attracted Irving’s attention, but, as a result of the War of 1812 which was being fought at the time, the magazine was dominated by stories and news of the war(Pattee 200). Irving’s departure to serve in the war combined with economic problems resulted in the downfall of the magazine; in 1815, the magazine failed, Irving travelled to Europe for “an absence of seventeen years”(Pattee 200)(Pattee
