Washington Irving, the “first American man of letters”(Britannica 393), was one of the first and most influential writers of early American history. “Named after President George Washington”(Prentice Hall 256) by his parents, Washington was the youngest and most loved of the eleven children of a Presbyterian patriarch and an Anglican mother (Britannica 393). After escaping a college education, in the years 1802 and 1803 Irving began to earn his title by writing whimsical and satirical essays ,under the pseudonym of “Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent”(Britannica 393), for his brother Peter’s newspaper(Britannica 393). For some years, Washington studied law with Josiah Ogden Hoffman, “with whose pretty daughter Matilda he early fell in love with”(Britannica 393). Now that the magazine had a publisher, it needed an editor; Irving was now well known for his successful Knickerbocker’s History… and was thought to be full of potential(Pattee 199). Washington was offered the job and “he… entered upon the adventure with no thought of serious work”(Pattee 200) and was met by many compliments for taking the reins of “literary leadership”(Pattee 199) as editor(Pattee 199). The literary opportunities of editorship were the things that attracted Irving’s attention, but, as a result of the War of 1812 which was being fought at the time, the magazine was dominated by stories and news of the war(Pattee 200).
