While most people believe that water hyacinths are beautiful, violet colored plants that accent a standard pond and are used in perfumes or cologne products, many people do not understand how those weeds can invade the waters, disrupting the ordinary ecosystem that was originally there before the hyacinths. Water hyacinths are known as the aquatic version of the common land invasive species, kudzu, however it mostly affects marine plant and animal life instead of biotic land creatures. Water hyacinths are invasive species that affect marine life living in aquatic ecosystems by overpopulating the surface of the waters, interfering with the sea creatures below to receive the sunlight from up above. The dead weeds can take away the oxygen in the aquatic …show more content…
The IUCN/SSc Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) depicted in “GLOBAL INVASIVE SPECIES DATABASE,” it explains, “Originally from South America, Eichhornia crassipes is one of the worst aquatic weeds in the world. Its beautiful, large purple and violet flowers make it a popular ornamental plant for ponds. It is now found in more than 50 countries on five continents. Water hyacinth is a very fast growing plant, with populations known to double in as little as 12 days. Infestations of this weed block waterways, limiting boat traffic, swimming and fishing. Water hyacinth also prevents sunlight and oxygen from reaching the water column and submerged plants. Its shading and crowding of native aquatic plants dramatically reduces biological diversity in aquatic ecosystems.” The population of a certain organism would be the amount of species of a creature or substance in a particular ecosystem. Biotic animals and plant populations who live off of sunlight and/or oxygen would decrease due to the lack of their necessities and of perished
