The discovery that life exists on other worlds would not be the most significant find because the recent discovery of the existence of liquid water on Mars was more important. A simple discovery of life existence is not substantial enough because nothing would really be concluded from it without further research and past knowledge.
In the Mars case, it has already been established that Mars was once like Earth before it froze up and became a cold, and perhaps lifeless, planet. We were only able to come up with this statement because extensive research has led up to it and finding water was the final discovery necessary for Mars to be considered similar to Earth once upon a time. As for discovering the existence of life on other worlds, it would only tell us that there is life out there, but it would not conclude all the types of life that is out there or any details about how they all live.

It’s been “known for years that water flowed on Mars long ago” (Drake). This recent discovery of liquid water is more significant because it shows that water is flowing on Mars as of right now. The idea of water flowing long ago can finally be revised to water is currently flowing on Mars. This is important because it brings the topic of Mars back into discussion, which allows for further missions to that planet that will only provide more knowledge about what Mars is really like.
Liquid water is essential for life. Finding water on Mars means that there could potentially be life out there. It was the discovery of life that led to this point, though. This shows that significant discoveries are the smaller ideas that allow for a conclusion based on past evidence, as opposed to big discoveries that do not provide any details and therefore, have no impact. Researchers are able to move forward with a more narrow focus on the planet that is most likely to sustain
