If you don't know what a watershed is, a watershed is a system of water that drains into storm drains and eventually ends up in one place. And for us, that place is the Potomac Crossing River, and then the Chesapeake Bay.
The way a watershed starts is usually by rain. So when I poured a cup of water onto my street, it ran off into the storm drains. It does this because my road is shaped like a bump. But when you pour water into the grass it doesn't run off. It absorbs through the permeable surface, and leaves groundwater. But if there is too much water, it will become runoff water, and goes to the storm drain. And if theres things like pesticide or fertilizer on the grass then it will go to the storm drain too, which pollutes the water. And once the fertilizer is in the water, it will cause excess algae to grow, because of the nitrate and phosphate in the chemical. …show more content…
I have a small garden in my backyard, and when I water the plants with the hose theres a small tube on the side that runoff flows through, and goes into the grass, then since its on a hill it runs through the grass and out onto the street.
On my walk I saw one storm drain had trash, an empty coke can, bottle cap, and a plastic bag. And if it went down the storm drain, it would make its way to the Potomac River, and then to the Chesapeake Bay.
Now there are five main tributaries, that flow to the Chesapeake Bay. They are all rivers,. First the Susquehanna River, Second the Potomac River, Third the Rappahannock River, Fourth the York River, And fifth the James River. And since they are so long, there is an abbreviation for it.
