The rabbits are on Watership Down and beginning to make burrows, Hazel sees a hawk is about to attack a mouse. “On impulse Hazel hopped down the bank… ‘Run’ he said ‘here; quick.’” The mouse replies “‘One time a mouse ‘elp a you. You want ‘im ‘e come’” (Page 145, 149). Hazel’s instincts are to protect and he protects this mouse, not knowing if he will even get something out of it. This show's moral compass because he knows subconsciously that its right to try and save this mouse. His moral compass leads to this mouse who he helped, promising to help him in return which ends up helping the rabbits. A large bird has just crashed near the warren. Hazel asks: “‘You hurt?… ‘We make you safe, bug hole. Food too.’” (Page 183) Hazel is unsure of whether this animal is safe or not safe, still he goes up and tries to help him. Even though Hazel is hoping that the bird will help them, he still does not know that the bird is safe or will be dangerous. All Hazel knows this that a bird is hurt and they could help each other. He knows that if he can befriend this animal it will lead to good things for the warren, he has a plan.
