The factors thataffect the strength of waves are: fetch(the distance over which the wind passes over the water), Wind Speed and Wind duration. the energy in the waves is used for four things- erosion of material, transport of material, friction bewteen waves and finally breaking on surface.
There is traction where coarse and heavy material is dragged along the bottom of the seabed and it is too heavy to be picked up by the waves energy. Another way is suspension- tiny particles of material is 'suspended' in the water as there is enough energy in the coastal system to hold them there.
In the Caribbean sea , off the coast of st. lucia the soufriere marine management area created in 1994 , divided the coastal areas into 5 areas: swimming/ snorkellers, yaughting, fishing , reserves and shipping- this prevented the conflicts between the fishermen and the tourist industry- as fishing damages the spectacular variety and biodiverstiy of the marine ecosystem- by providing protected area, it allowed fish stocks to regenerate - providing hiher attraction for tourism such a scuba diving , it also benefitted the fishermen as fish stocks rose, and therefore their income.
Another example of management is in the solent surrounding Southampton's port- the port has the largest oil refinery in the uk, it supplies the uk with 15% of all its petroleum products- and handles over 2000 shipmovements each year, environmentalists wereconcerned about the damage to the mudlands ans saltmarshes that provide habitiats for vast numbers of migratory birds- consequentially the Keyhaven Nature Reserve was created in order to create a sanctuary for these birds and limit the impact of the ports usage on them.
250mm rain each year- when it does fall its is concentrated around the same time - due to the extreme temperature the ground is extremely hard caked'' this causes flash flooding which leadds to extensive erosion - gorges/canyons - erosion such as hydralic action - exploits weaknesses in rocks - , resistant rock causes vertical erosion eg grand canyon missisipi river. wadi - dried out river bed - wadi rum , jordan alluvial fan - bottom of hill or mountain side caused by the change in load carrying capacity , discharge falls , alluvium is deposited. wind- aeolian erosion - such as abrasion (
