Love and Gelato, a novel by Jenna Evans Welch, tells the coming of age story of a 16-year-old girl who is dealing with grief over the death of her mother and travels to Italy for her mother’s last wishes. We’re introduced to Carolina Emerson, “Lina” for short, while she is in the patient room with her mom, her mother explains to her that she has to go to Italy and live with her long-time friend. Lina doesn’t want to go, but after her mother’s passing her grandmother encourages her to go, she decides to fly there and meets her dad named, “Howard”. She is skeptical and doesn’t want to be there. Through the character Lina, Welch teaches us that the process of grief is different for everyone, there is no right way.
