Native Americans, known to occupied what is now called North America, have mythologies and beliefs tracing back thousands of years. In a video, Floyd “Red Crow” Westerman of the Dakota Sioux Nation demonstrates that humans currently have forgotten how to live spiritually. Regardless of the time period, living spiritually is important in our world because we need to embrace who we are at this very moment, practice mindfulness, and accept/appreciate all experiences. In order to become who we want to be, we must first embrace who we are. This can be achieved through self-acceptance. One important Buddist monk says that to “embrace a true understanding of compassion, we must first embrace our suffering” (Brunetti par. 5). In other words, to become spiritual beings, a person must first accept his/her physical imperfections and acknowledge that their physical state is temporary, while their spiritual being will continue to exist in its expedition.
