Sustained silent first emerged in the 1960s (Siah and Kwok, 2010, Page 168). Lyman Hunt from the University of Vermont proposed the idea of uninterrupted reading daily and the idea soon traveled to many schools in the 1970s (Siah and Kwok, 2010, Page 169). Although Sustained Silent Reading is a broad term, many programs of reading involve daily uninterrupted reading. Free Voluntary Reading, Drop Everything and Read, Daily Independent Reading Time, and Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading are programs that incorporate daily uninterrupted reading(Gardiner, 2005, Page 15). Although every Sustained Silent Reading program is different, the main focus is placed on increasing students’ interest of reading.
