Louis Armstrong is considered one of the world’s greatest jazz musicians. He was a trumpeter and singer from the birthplace of jazz music, New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in a very poor neighborhood, and was eventually sent to Colored Waif’s Home for Boys after being arrested for firing a gun on New Year’s Eve in 1912. At this home he found his passion for music after learning to play the cornet. He left the house at just 13 years old with dreams of making it big. The big influence on his career was Joe “King” Oliver. He too was a cornet player, and was a mentor for Armstrong, and in 1922 he was asked by King Oliver to play in his Creole Jazz Band in Chicago, and he accepted. The people there loved the way that he played and wanted to play
