I had the privilege to go volunteer at the pine street inn local homeless shelter. It was such a great opportunity to be able to serve my community. This shelter has been around since 1999 helping people in the community. I was pleased to helped preparing and serving food to the homeless people. I chose the homeless shelter to volunteer, because when I see a homeless person on the street, I always wonder why there are people on the street begging for help, when this country is so bless with opportunities. I found it strange to have such problem in our country.
There are many things that causes people to become homeless. For instance, it could be people loses their houses, due to an earthquake or hurricane. Other causes could be physical illness

As I came along to talk and get to know them. It really amazed me to hear their stories and the reasons why they became homeless. The conversation began, after I introduced myself and explained my purposed of being there helping and serving. One of the young men, in group name was jack. He was very nice and respectful. He started telling me about his life story. He was a college student studying medicine to become a Doctor. Suddenly He lose his parents in a tragic car accident. The death of his parents lead him to become depressed. He couldn’t focus in school anymore, he started drinking and became addicted to alcohol. He got kicked out of med school, he couldn’t find a job. He basically lost everything, he became poor and mentally ill. Jack had no other family members to help him. He had no other option than to come live at the shelter. Even in the book Sue and Sue, spoke about poverty and its effect in chapter 25 pages (713) “Poverty is related to and often precedes the development of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression (Hudson, 2005); it produces conditions conductive to the developmental of mental health issues.” It was really sad to hear about his story, this make viewed life differently and appreciate everything I have, because life is
