The late 1930s to early 1940s were not shy of this continuing pattern of horrifying events. Through pre and during war many atrocities happened, two of these being the Holocaust and the Rape of Nanjing. The Rape of Nanjing was an event that began in 1937 when Japan stormed the capital of China. For months citizens have been victims of mass slaughter, violence, rape, and many more. It is said by the History site that “About 150,000 men were killed, and 20,000 women and girls raped”. Guixiang Liu, a child at the time, witnessed many of these atrocities right in front of him, “My father and brother were murdered by two soldiers, leaving just my mother and I left” (Liu 2014).
