In today’s society, when one is between the ages of seventeen to twenty-one, they are expected to determine which career field they would like to extend their education in. The Japanese culture have a concept named Ikigai which assists one in this decision making. Ikigai roughly translates into “reason for being”: “ikiru” means “to live,” and “kai” means “the realization of what one hopes for.” This framework can integrate someone’s professional, personal, spiritual, and emotional life. As leaders, as professionals, as human beings, we are all striving for balance between purpose, happiness, and fulfillment.
