John F. Kennedy emphasizes the depth and meaning of his speech with the use of symbolism. Kennedy used the phrase “… the torch has been passed…” as a form of symbolism to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. The torch represents the responsibilities of the citizens. Kennedy used the term torch because fire can represent the lively-hood of the country. Just like the flame can die the country can die if the new generation does not take the responsibilities of the country. “…chains of poverty.” Kennedy stated to give citizens the idea that poverty controls people.
