“Richard Cory” is a poem written by Edwin Arlington Robinson where it highlights the way in which humanity hides behind a façade. Many psychologists think of the human being as synonymous of an ice berg. This analogy states that the majority of a person’s personality is hidden just like the majority of an iceberg is underwater. What we see from a person every day is just the tip of the iceberg. Many are carrying burdens that are hidden from the rest of the world. In this poem, Richard Cory is seen as a prominent bachelor by those in his community. His community was met with an awful surprise when Richard Cory committed suicide. He could have communicated with someone if he needed support from others. By asking for help he may have connected with someone that could have done more than just lead him out of from depression but also forge real friendships with them that could have lasted a lifetime. He did speak cordially to people on a daily basis which can be supported in the phrase “he was always human when he talked”. It is interesting that Richards point of view was not displayed in the poem. This leads the readers to ask whether or not he had a family to support him. It could be possible that he may have experienced hurt from family members which results in him not being able to open up to them. If Richard possibly had problems with his family then it could have made him wearier of opening up to the town’s people he did not even know. Family is a very important thing when it comes to being emotionally stable. If one is being broken down or even placed under a lot of pressure to be something they are not it is possible for them to become anxious and depressed. He also may have felt judged by others but this is just an example of insecurity that played a part in his demise. In my opinion the poet wanted to highlight that when others do not reach out we need to reach out to them. The importance of being a friend is crucial and can save a life.
