The bottled water industry has grown immensely popular in recent years. However, our taste for bottle water has grown insatiable and unsustainable for our environment. Not only is bottled water convenient for us, but many people seem to think that bottled water in the US is safer and tastier than drinking tap water. This issue of the large amounts of bottled water use has many public and environmental health concerns. There is the concern of where the plastic bottles go after we are done with them and how this effects the physical enviornment. There is also concerns of the health effects the type of plastic that bottled water is made of is harmful to humans.

There are both pros and cons to the whole phenomena of bottled water. The reason bottled water is so prevalent in our society is because of it’s convenience. You can take the water anywhere and they are easily sealed. They seem ideal for working out and traveling. Its also easily stored which is ideal for emergency situations. Most people agree that bottled water does taste better than tap water because of the purification process.

The risk of this can be increased when bottled water is left in very warm spaces such as hot cars. Around 40 percent of bottled water is actually sourced from tap water so it begs the question: What is the point of drinking bottled water? The manufacturing process of bottled water encourages the use of fossil fuels which in turn contribute to global climate change. Lastly hundreds of thousands of tons of plastic waste is being generated from the used of bottled water. Only a small fraction of this is even recycled. Most of this ends of in landfills or oceans and takes hundreds of years to
