Bourne is forced to work ten times harder than other people to overcome adversity because of his psychical disabilities. He says, “For he has all the battles of a stronger man to fight, and is at a double disadvantage in fighting them” (Bourne 57). He also says, “I never resigned myself to the inevitable, but overexerted myself constantly in a grim determination to succeed” (Bourne 59). Bourne goes about his day just as any other person, and faces similar situations as they would. However, because of his disability, his situation is handled differently. It is no surprise to him that his disability leaves a bad impression and pushes people away. Therefore, Bourne has feelings of weakness and no confidence in himself because of the atmosphere
