Definition Electron Affinity is the amount of energy needed to remove or gain an electron from a charged ion in the gaseous form. During an exothermic reaction an atom releases energy and electrons giving the atom a negative charge. When the atom gains energy and an electron, an endothermic reaction takes place in the atom. The energy used in each of these reactions which is needed to remove or gain an electron from an ion to make a stable or neutral atom.
