I believe evil is just a meaningless adjective. I would consider evil to be more or less the same thing as moral rightness or moral wrongness. I think it fundamentally is based on the consequences that an action has on the well-being of other sentient beings. This to me seems the most rigorously defendable attribute to base right and wrongness on.
So let’s say we are discussing the James Holmes movie theater shooting for example, I'd say that what he did was wrong because of the negative effect it had on the well-being of others, and this would be true whether or not he really "cares" that it's right or wrong because in a very objective sense the world is a worse place than it otherwise would've been had he not shot a bunch of people up.
