Gun control: Too Much Violation of the Second Amendment?

Gun control in the United States of America has been a continuous point of contention for its citizens for many years. The second amendment gives Americans the “right to bear arms” and specifically states “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Originally the early citizens of the US were given this right due to early militias and concern of too much power given to the federal government. One article claimed that programs that help focus on violence prevention and mental health within a community or with specific individuals would be more effective. The Conversation. Another part of their research suggests that cities with mass shootings tend to have a higher population and higher income families. Cities with less violence tend to have more police officers. Overall, if there is more of a focus on the people and not the guns, there would be less violence in America. Further, there would be less debate on taking away our rights as US citizens.

Another issue with gun control and banning guns, is that the more laws are instituted, the more likely these guns are obtained on the black market. In 2017, Chicago had the most issues with gun violence but also had the most gun restriction laws and even a ban until 2010. Camacho, L'Esperance, 2018). They believe that the American government should do what Australia has done within their country. For example, in Australia they had a “buy back” program where the government bought back all semi-automatic and automatic weapons. Since they did this, there hasn’t been a mass shooting there since. Brown, Michael (Brown, 2018). Another argument is that the Second Amendment was written so long ago and when it was written it was to protect the United States against a possible person coming to take over. This was the reason given to allow people to carry guns. Now, people do not have this need. Many people also believe that citizens should still be able to carry guns in order to hunt to provide food for their families, however laws against machine guns should be in place.

However, we can’t ignore that the research shows that no amount of gun control in the United States will prevent people from acting out. There needs to be more mental health care provided, and attention to people, not guns. Again, guns are not the problem. Recall Chicago had strict laws, and this still did not prevent
