Mary Rowlandson’s captivity narrative describes her experience as a captive of the Native Americans during the King Philips War in 1676. After reading two secondary documents about Mary Rowlandson, I feel very sad for her. Both of the secondary documents helped me understand more about her life and her pains during the time she was captured and treated like a slave. However, one document provides the biographical information and background on Rowlandson, and the other one compares her narrative with the “modern captivity” narratives.
Although both of the secondary documents are telling us about Mary Rowlandson’s life, there are differences in each document. First, the primary document was written by Rowlandson herself in 1682 about her own experience during her most terrible time in life. She had one of the most terrible lives. The original document of Mary Rowlandson is telling everybody, not just about her pain and her sorrow about being captured, about being a shave, and about losing the most important people in her life. It also lets us know how much obstacles she had to face to overcome all of those horrible things in her life to continue living. There was food that she could not eat and there were times that she was kept outside during the winter. Only the person that gets through these things can understand how terrible they are. By reading the secondary document, I can actually image the unforgotten moments that Mary Rowlandson had been through. However, under the “book review” comparing her narrative with modern “captivity” narratives, both by her writing, we can image more and have a better understanding of the terrible life that Rowlandson had to live when she was
