First is sad. In the beginning of the story her sister tells her that her husband was killed. “It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing” (Chopin). The she tells her is veiled and half concealing, that we don’t have words to describe it. Then her reaction was different from all of the other women. “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance” (Chopin). In the beginning we are introduced that Mrs. Mallard has heart trouble. “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death” (Chopin). Since she has heart problems, the news of her husband’s death has to be given gently or she might have a heart attack. Then when she was locked up and alone in her bedroom her sister was worried that she might get ill. “Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhold, imploreing for admission. “Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door-- you will make yourself ill (Chopin). What are you doing, Louise? For heaven's sake open the door" (Chopin). Her sister must have been worried, because she has to get taking care of and if that doesn’t happen, she have heart
