On April 28th, 1967, Muhammad Ali choose to defy the United States draft for the Vietnam War with reasons stating that it was against his religion. Regardless of his reasons, he was immediately stripped of his heavyweight title. Then, he was convicted for draft evasion, sentenced to five years in prison and fined one hundred thousand dollars. He was also banned from boxing for three years. They appealed the case and the supreme court overruled the decision (History.com). Debates broke out about the rights that Ali had and the legitimacy of the war. Many people would argue that Ali wasn’t dodging the draft, he was opposing it.
