Many of my mother’s beliefs are shaped by her culture and Sikh religion. Her reactions and responses to certain situations can all be traced back to her upbringing. The same can be said about the rest of my family. “The expression of emotion, of course, is shaped by culture expectations…” (Shott, 1979, p. 1320). This quote supports my theory that my mother’s reactions along with her emotions and what she expects from my siblings and myself come from the roots of her culture. From a symbolic-interactionist perspective I can see that my mother’s culture shapes her daily interactions. On the other hand, my father, brother, and I do not have as deep a belief in the Sikh culture. As a result, we do not base our ideologies and judgements on our religion.
