Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe Two authors, both seeking freedom for slaves, gave views from both sides of slavery. Harriet Beecher Stowe had witnessed slavery, but Frederick Douglass lived the life of a slave. Each writer used their pen to spread the word of the awful injustices of slavery. In writing their stories, their hope was to appeal to Americans and to “…awaken sympathy and feeling for the African race…” (Stowe 913). Stowe’s preface undoubtedly pressures us to remind ourselves we are all God’s children. Her sympathy and kindness toward all people is rooted in her Christianity.
