Have you ever felt lonely before? Some people have experienced or suffered from loneliness. During the Great Depression, many suffer from loneliness. Loneliness is a feeling of isolation and sadness because one has no friends or company. It was almost impossible to escape this feeling during the Great Depression. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, many characters such as Crooks, and Curley's wife are lonely, therefore it has many consequences on the story.
Although George and Lennie have each other, many characters in Of Mice and Men are pretty lonely. Some of these characters are Curley’s wife and Crooks, they are by far the most lonely in the story. These characters had conversations just about loneliness. Crooks is lonely because he’s black, and he lives by himself because nobody likes him. At one point in the book, Crooks said, “A guy needs somebody to be near him,” he whined. “A guy goes nuts if ain’t got nobody.” Another quote Crooks said was, ”I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick.” When George

Right after George and Slim walk away, Carlson makes a comment about their action. The last sentence is, “Curley and Carlson looked after them. And Carlson said, “Now what do you suppose eatin’ them two guys?”” He said this because they don't understand what it feels like to lose something they truly cared about. Yes, Curley's wife is dead, however they did not have the best relationship because right before she died she admitted that she doesn’t like Curley. The last sentence clearly defines that the characters are lonely.
In conclusion, loneliness has a big effect on the story. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, many characters are lonely, thus it has many consequences on the story. It reinforces the idea that everyone needs someone to talk to, to avoid suffering from loneliness. All of us need to have friendship and companionship to live happily , and free of
