What does it mean to be an American? Many people would say you were born and raised in the country, you have freedom, we all solute to a flag, we are proud of the men and women who put their lives on the front line for us, and some might even say it has to do with politics. These are all things that make you american but that is also not all. I would know with some personal stories. My father John Stokes was born and raised in Glasgow Scotland along with his sister and parents. My grandfather Ernest Stokes lived in scotland for about 40 years before moving the family to a better place. That better place would be known as Northwood Ohio. Things over in Scotland at the time weren't the best so my grandpa's brother found him a job working on Tanks down in Lima Ohio. For the time that they spent here all four of them worked on becoming american citizens. Later on they all received their citizenship and have been apart of the United States for over 40 years. So it doesn't just mean that you have to be born in the united States to be a true American. We all came from somewhere, this is what makes America. Our country is based around our ancestors meaning each and everyone of us came from a different part of the world. Just like my own dad who was actually born and raised in Scotland. My mom's side of the family came from France, My grandma's mother was from canada, My friends Grandpa is from greece, I have another friend whose family is from Lebanon. My point is that this country is full of different cultures that's what we are about. Other countries strive to be like us in fact many people leave their home countries to be in America to get away from war, or dictators. So when Trump says that he wants to close borders it just doesn't make any sense because those people are what America is founded
