In the poem Beowulf shows how he is a hero in 2 different times in his life. When he is young and when he is growing older.When he was younger, he started to be considered a hero when he showed great strength and bravery. He starts with Grendal, Grendal is an evil monster. Beowulf says he will face Grendel with , "no weapons/ therefore/for either this night/unarmed he shall face me if face me he dares". During Beowulf's fight with Grendel, Beowulf, rips his arm off barehanded.
