There are many protests nowadays about many things, and there always will be because everyone has their own opinions and not everyone agrees with others. Some examples of protests include: anti-war, higher pay, more rights, race, and many more topics. But can you imagine what rebellions and protests would be like in the 1800s? That is exactly what I will be talking about in this essay: rebellions in both Upper Canada and Lower Canada that occurred throughout 1837–1838.

After the War of 1812, the best unfarmed lands were given to the wealthy British. It was not fair to the other immigrant and Canadian farmers living there because it took away great farmland from them, which is basically where they get their food from. Because of this, Canadian and Loyalist farmers were forced to farm on land with poor soil, as they practically had no other choice. That left many families in sometimes near starvation and poverty because it was really hard to grow crops due to the poor soil they had to farm with. Poverty was growing in both Upper Canada and Lower Canada, and lots of poor people felt as if the wealthy people were ignoring them and their sufferings.

He criticised the government of Lower Canada in The Vindicator, his newspaper, and called for an end to British control of the government. He was in jail for 40 days, and after being freed, he decided to run for office in the Montreal election. Fights broke out as crowds came to vote. Tracey won the election but died of cholera before he could take
